Hubballi, March 6 : Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said there are more than 200 students from Karnataka still stranded in Kharkiv city of Ukraine. “Some of them are 30 kms away in a safe place. We are making all efforts to bring them back,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine by using his good relations with surrounding countries like Russia, Poland and Romania, Bommai said. “I am also in constant touch with the Indian Embassy officials in Ukraine and its neighbouring countries. I am also in touch with the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Every possible step is being taken to bring our students back home amidst heavy bombings in Kharkiv city,” he told reporters here. As far as bringing back Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar’s body, Bommai said it has been embalmed and kept in Kharkiv’s mortuary, but the officials are facing hardships shifting it because of the heavy bombings there. Naveen was killed in an Ukraine shelling on March 1. The CM had visited the house of the deceased in Chalageri village and consoled his parents. He also handed out a Rs 25 lakh cheque to Naveen’s father. Welcoming an Ukraine returnee at the city airport, Bommai said the return of Chaitra Saunshi, a medical student from Dharwad district, has raised hopes of many more students returning from Kharkiv safely.
