ED Detains Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam Immediately After Jail Release in Rampur

The Enforcement Directorate detained Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam right after their release from jail in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.

Rampur, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The Enforcement Directorate (ED) took significant action against prominent Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan on Saturday. As soon as he and his son, Abdullah Azam, were released from Rampur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh, they were detained by the ED.

In a statement, the ED confirmed, “We have taken Azam Khan into custody. After completing the necessary procedures, we will arrest him and present him in the Ghaziabad PMLA court.”

Outside the jail, a growing crowd of Samajwadi Party supporters gathered, prompting local authorities to heighten security measures. Additional police forces were summoned from nearby stations to manage the situation.

Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam were released in connection with a case involving multiple PAN cards. Their release came shortly after the Allahabad High Court granted them significant relief on October 29, allowing their bail applications and suspending their sentences. However, the court denied their request to stay the conviction.

Justice Samit Gopal presided over the hearing regarding their review petitions. These petitions challenged the sentences and convictions imposed by subordinate courts concerning the possession of two PAN cards with differing birth dates. The prosecution alleges that the second PAN card was used in electoral nomination papers.

Both Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam contested the lower court’s verdict through criminal review petitions in the High Court, seeking to suspend their sentences and obtain bail. While the High Court granted bail and suspended their sentences, it upheld the conviction, leaving the final decision on the review petitions pending.
