New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently convened a crucial conference of Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to finalise preparations for the upcoming India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) 2026.
The meeting took place at IIIDEM’s headquarters in New Delhi, marking a significant step ahead of the major global event scheduled from January 21 to 23 at India Mandapam, New Delhi.
IIIDEM 2026 is set to be India’s largest international conference on election management and democracy. It will bring together nearly 100 international representatives from election management bodies (EMBs) worldwide, along with officials from international organisations, foreign missions in India, and election experts.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accompanied by Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, addressed the CEOs at the conference. They provided detailed insights into the event and highlighted the pivotal roles of CEOs. Following the address, the CEOs engaged in in-depth discussions across 36 thematic groups, each led by a respective CEO. These groups cover various aspects of election management aimed at compiling comprehensive knowledge drawn from the experiences of global election bodies.
The conference agenda includes an inaugural session, a plenary session of EMB leaders, working group meetings, and the launch of ECInet. Thematic sessions will focus on global electoral challenges, international election standards, and best practices. Additionally, the ECI leadership plans to hold more than 40 bilateral meetings during the event.
Notably, four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), twelve National Law Universities, and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) will actively contribute. These premier academic institutions will collaborate with state and union territory CEOs as well as national and international experts in the 36 breakout sessions.
This conference underlines India’s commitment to advancing global election management standards through collaborative knowledge sharing and expert discussions.
