EAM meets former Sri Lankan PM amid worsening economic crisis

Colombo, March 29 : External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, amid talk in Colombo of appointing him as Prime Minister of a proposed National ty Government as the island nation grapples with a worsening economic crisis. The EAM said in a tweet: “Met former PM @RW_UNP after the BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting. “Apprised him of India’s economic support extended to Sri Lanka.” With Sri Lanka struggling amid one of its worst economic situations, with the national currency plunging, and electricity, fuel and food in short supply, there has been increasing talk of appointing a national ty government with Ranil to be made the Prime Minister. The EAM also met Sri Lankan Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem. “Glad to meet SLMC leader @Rauff_Hakeem. “Discussed current political and economic developments in Sri Lanka,” he tweeted. RN
