Wellington, 12 December (Daily Kiran) – On the third day of the Wellington Test, New Zealand defeated West Indies by nine wickets to record their first win in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Fast bowler Jacob Duffy was deadly in the second innings, taking five wickets and bowling out West Indies for just 128 runs. Chasing a modest target of 56, New Zealand secured victory before tea and took a 1-0 lead in the series. West Indies have now lost six out of seven matches in this WTC cycle and remain winless.

The day began with the run-out of Brandon King for 22, triggering a collapse that put West Indies on the back foot. Shai Hope offered an easy catch in the same over, while captain Roston Chase fell victim to Duffy’s rising delivery. Although Kavem Hodge (35) and Justin Greaves (25) tried to steady the innings, Hodge’s pull shot was brilliantly caught by substitute fielder Will Young in the 31st over.

At 88 for six, West Indies’ chances of winning were slim. Duffy and Michael Rae wrapped up the innings, with Duffy finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 38.

The target chase was straightforward for New Zealand. Despite an early wicket of Tom Latham, Devon Conway (28 not out) and Kane Williamson (16 not out) guided the team to victory within 10 overs.

New Zealand had declared their first innings at 278 for 9. West Indies managed 205 in response.

After the match, New Zealand captain Tom Latham praised the bowling effort, saying, “Our bowling improved in the second innings. Duffy’s performance was outstanding.”

West Indies captain Roston Chase admitted, “The pitch was easy for batting, but we could not capitalise.”

The third Test between the two teams will begin on 18 December at Mount Maunganui.

Brief Score:

New Zealand 278/9 declared (Henry 61, Conway 60; Tickner 3-70)

and 57/1 (Conway 28*, Williamson 16*)

West Indies 205 (Hope 47; Tickner 4-32)

and 128 (Hodge 35; Duffy 5-38, Rae 3-45)

Result: New Zealand won by 9 wickets
