Chennai, May 26: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party launched a strong attack on the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday, following the recent stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy. The party accused the government of misusing the police force and highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
In an interview, DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan claimed that the police are being utilized to address government criticisms rather than ensuring public safety. He stated that law enforcement is engaged in personal agendas instead of focusing on their primary duties. Elangovan pointed out that YouTuber Mukhtar and his family were taken to the police station, emphasizing that the police are prioritizing their critics over maintaining law and order.
He further alleged that police actions are selective, asserting that the government does not serve the public. “If something happens to the Chief Minister personally, the police act immediately. But they are not there for the common man, which is why such incidents occur,” he remarked.
Elangovan accused political parties and civil society of remaining silent about this incident, comparing it to previous administrations. He noted that if such an event had occurred during the DMK’s rule, there would have been widespread outcry. “Only our opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin is speaking out about these incidents. He has highlighted the number of crimes and murders, yet no one else is addressing this issue,” he added.
On a separate note, Elangovan reiterated the DMK’s opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam project, urging Chief Minister Vijay to use any meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise Tamil Nadu‘s concerns. “We have opposed Mekedatu. It is the Chief Minister’s responsibility to take action. If he is meeting the Prime Minister, he must succeed in addressing our issues. That is our wish,” he concluded.
