Mumbai, August 22: The Ministry of Education has announced the names of teachers selected for the National Teacher Award 2026. Among them is Munmun Bhattacharya, the headmistress of a middle school in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. She will be honored by the President on September 5, Teacher’s Day. Munmun’s achievement has brought joy to the entire Dhanbad community, as she has been instrumental in shaping children’s futures through innovation and improved teaching methods despite limited resources.
Three teachers from Jharkhand were nominated for the National Teacher Award, with Munmun Bhattacharya standing out for her contributions. Award recipients receive a cash prize of ₹50,000, a silver medal, and a certificate of appreciation.
In an interview with a news agency, Munmun expressed her gratitude for the honor she will receive on Teacher’s Day. “This recognition is awarded every year on September 5. I am thankful to the Ministry of Education and the state education department for this opportunity,” she stated, also thanking the district administration and education department.
She highlighted that the primary vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN). This initiative emphasizes basic education for children, which strengthens their foundation for further learning. Munmun noted that they are implementing FLN effectively, enhancing students’ educational experiences. Given Dhanbad’s status as a coal capital, they have integrated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into various educational activities, promoting experiential learning.
Munmun has been working at the Baramsia Middle School since 2019, previously serving at a government school in Muri-Silli. Despite limited resources, she has developed teaching-learning materials (TLM) to make education engaging and effective. Her approach extends beyond textbooks, incorporating innovative activities, computer-based learning, and better library usage.
She has played a crucial role in activating the student parliament and ensuring 100% enrollment of children in the nutrition sector. To connect students with environmental conservation, she initiated a nutrition garden on the school premises and promoted water conservation efforts. Through various activities, she has aimed to develop leadership skills and self-confidence among students, resulting in positive changes in the school’s academic environment.
