Delhi High Court Takes Firm Stance on DU Elections Amid Violence and Rule Violations

New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has adopted a strict approach regarding the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled for 2026. During a crucial hearing, the court addressed incidents of violence and violations of the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines that occurred recently. Ashu Bidhuri, representing the student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), ASAP, presented the organization’s stance in court.

Bidhuri explained that the case revolves around violence that erupted two days earlier in the Law Faculty and breaches of the Lyngdoh Committee’s election guidelines. Both students and outsiders were reportedly involved in the altercations. Allegations include the use of vehicles, pamphlets, and posters, which contravene the directives set forth by the High Court and the Lyngdoh Committee.

The petitioners sought a halt to the elections based on these violations. In response, the court issued notices to all political student organizations, requiring them to provide explanations. “The petitioners requested a suspension of the elections. Consequently, the court summoned all political parties, including ASAP, to respond, granting them approximately a month to do so,” Bidhuri stated. The court has indicated that any political party or student found in violation of the rules may face financial repercussions.

Bidhuri emphasized that ASAP has maintained compliance with the regulations. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has already initiated action regarding the violence at the Law Faculty, including filing an FIR and making arrests.

Referencing the court’s comments, Bidhuri noted the seriousness with which the judiciary is treating the matter. The court expressed concerns about the potential creation of a criminal society under the guise of democracy and questioned whether external influences are undermining the electoral process. Clear directives were issued that stringent actions should be taken against any student or political organization found violating the Lyngdoh guidelines.
