New Delhi, February 17: The Delhi BJP criticized the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday, labeling their actions as a sign of chaotic thinking after AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj symbolically burned a newspaper in protest against what he termed ‘poor’ media coverage.
Delhi BJP media chief Praveen Shankar Kapoor targeted Bhardwaj’s actions during a press conference, accusing him of attempting to intimidate the media and suppress press freedom. Kapoor stated that this act demonstrated the AAP’s chaotic mindset.
He noted that it is perhaps the first time in Delhi’s political history that a party leader has publicly burned a newspaper simply because it did not align with their perspective. Kapoor condemned the act as disgraceful, comparing it to the AAP government’s oppressive tactics against the media in Punjab, particularly targeting a specific media group.
Kapoor emphasized that for 11 consecutive years, the Arvind Kejriwal government pressured the media to ensure that the BJP received no coverage. Now, while in opposition, AAP leaders are trying to exert pressure on the media by resorting to such extreme measures.
The Delhi BJP firmly denounced Bhardwaj’s actions during the press conference, asserting that it clearly indicates that if AAP returns to power, they would once again implement a cycle of media suppression reminiscent of the years 2013 to 2024.
On Monday, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva accused AAP of double standards regarding a private school in South Delhi that allegedly withheld admit cards for some students’ board exams. Sachdeva pointed out that Bhardwaj protested against the school’s actions, which were permitted by the Kejriwal and Atishi governments for the academic years 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 due to fee hikes.
He remarked that AAP leaders change their political stance so quickly that even a chameleon could not match their speed.
