Gonda, May 10: World Championship and Asian Games silver medalist Deepak Punia has successfully reached the finals of the 92 kg freestyle category at the Senior Open Ranking Tournament 2026 held in Nandini Nagar, Gonda.
A total of 593 wrestlers from across the country are participating in this national-level competition organized by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). They are competing in ten weight categories to secure their national rankings. In the 92 kg freestyle category, Deepak Punia showcased a series of technically disciplined performances, culminating in his advancement to the finals. He defeated his fellow Haryana wrestler Raja with a score of 11-1 in the semifinals, finishing the bout in just 2 minutes and 53 seconds. He will now face a competitor from Haryana for the title.
In the 125 kg heavyweight category, a tough match unfolded between Haryana athletes Rohit and Anirudh in match number 179. Despite Anirudh’s strong defense, Rohit managed to secure decisive match points, winning the contest and advancing to the next round, which unfortunately eliminated Anirudh from the tournament.
Commenting on the event and its framework, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh expressed his delight at the large turnout of wrestlers from across India. He stated, “It is heartening to see so many wrestlers coming to Nandini Nagar and competing among the best at the 2026 Open Senior National Ranking Tournament.”
He further added, “This provides every wrestler in India with a platform to compete in their respective weight categories, test themselves against the best, and achieve the highest rankings. Such a bottom-up approach will help strengthen Indian wrestling at both domestic and international levels.”
