New Delhi, March 7 : The Supreme Court on Monday expressed serious concern over the misuse of its order on Covid-19 compensation, saying it will come down heavily on those who are collecting ex-gratia on the basis of fake certificates and hinted at issuing order for independent probe to catch the racketeers. A Division Bench headed by Justice MR Shah and comprising Justice BV Nagarathna, was hearing a plea with regard to disbursal of compensation of victims who died due to Covid-19. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta suggested there should be a definite time limit for filing the application and availing the benefit of compensation by the next of kin of those who have succumbed. He said the limitation period should be prescribed as the said process cannot go on indefinitely. He also submitted that the issue of fake Covid-19 certificate / fake claims and how they can be curbed, must be reviewed. The Bench agreed with Mehta and asked senior lawyer, R. Basant, to make suggestions in this regard and fixed the next date of hearing as March 14. SM ING
