Jabalpur, May 5: The tragic cruise accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh has prompted a stern response from the court. An FIR has been ordered against the cruise driver and other crew members present during the incident.
Judicial Magistrate DP Sutrakar of the Jabalpur District Court took suo motu cognizance of the case, directing the Bargi police station chief to file the FIR within two days and inform the court.
This action follows reports from various newspapers and social media. The court stated that the cruise driver operated the vessel recklessly, abandoning passengers to drown while saving himself. The court emphasized that failing to attempt to rescue drowning individuals constitutes a serious crime.
The court recognized that this case falls under Sections 106 and 110 of the Indian Penal Code 2023. It remarked that without FIRs and investigations in such cases, similar incidents could recur in the future, making strict action necessary.
However, the court also commended those who attempted to save lives during the incident.
It is important to note that on April 30, a cruise capsized at Bargi Dam, resulting in the deaths of 13 people, with several others injured.
The court instructed the police chief to file the FIR and submit a report to the court within two days, ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
Madhya Pradesh’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that the administration acted promptly upon receiving news of the tragedy. He assured that they have been closely monitoring the situation and were fully engaged in the rescue operation. While some individuals were successfully rescued, unfortunately, 13 lives could not be saved.
Minister Lodhi also mentioned that the state government is taking the incident seriously and maintaining continuous oversight. He added, “Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is personally monitoring the situation. I arrived at the scene myself, and Minister Rakesh Singh was also present before me. We all stayed on-site throughout the night to ensure there were no shortcomings in the rescue operation.”
