New Delhi, April 28: A controversy has emerged at Jamia Millia Islamia regarding a program where the student organization AISF protested against the proposed ‘Youth Kumbh’ event by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Other progressive student groups at Jamia also supported AISF in this protest.
Student organizations claim that the RSS is attempting to promote its ideology by organizing events like ‘Youth Kumbh’ across universities nationwide. They allege that the organization presents itself as a part of the nation’s historical legacy while having no significant role in the freedom struggle.
Protesting students stated that the country’s freedom fighters fought for a democratic and secular India. They believe that there is an ongoing attempt to create an atmosphere against this ideology, which they oppose. Students on campus chanted slogans, asserting that there should be no place in the university for any agenda linked to communalism and violence.
During the protest, AISF also criticized the Jamia administration. The organization accused the administration of allowing the RSS to host the event while denying similar permissions to other progressive student groups. They labeled this as a biased approach and insisted that the university should treat all organizations equally.
The protesting students emphasized that the atmosphere in universities should promote education, discussion, and democratic values. They demanded that institutions like Jamia not permit any programs that could create divisions in society.
Currently, discussions on this issue are ongoing on campus, and student organizations have made it clear that they will continue their protests. Meanwhile, an official response from the administration is awaited.
