Kolkata, April 28: The Election Commission has appointed Ajay Pal Sharma, an IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh, as the new police observer for South 24 Parganas district. Known as an ‘encounter specialist,’ Sharma is at the center of a controversy following the emergence of a viral video showing him visiting the home of Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir.
Sharma’s appointment is viewed as a crucial step to maintain law and order in sensitive areas ahead of the second phase of voting. However, the viral video has sparked a new political debate.
In the video, Sharma is seen reprimanding Jahangir and instructing him to adhere to the law. He warns that if the TMC candidate does not improve his behavior, he will face consequences later.
Questions regarding the video’s authenticity and context have already arisen. The TMC has reacted sharply, alleging that the situation is orchestrated by the BJP. They warned that no one, regardless of their rank, will escape legal repercussions after the elections.
The TMC claims that this entire incident is a deliberate attempt to create confusion ahead of the elections.
As of now, the Election Commission has not issued any official statement regarding the video. Commission sources indicate that strict monitoring of observers has been mandated to ensure free and peaceful elections in the state.
It has also been stated that immediate action will be taken against any candidate or political party found violating the law.
Political analysts believe that the deployment of a tough officer like Ajay Pal Sharma could play a significant role in maintaining law and order before the elections. However, it is also anticipated that every action he takes will be scrutinized politically.
Recently, the Election Commission released a list of 11 new police observers, with Ajay Pal Sharma’s name at the top. He is known as a ‘dabang officer’ in Uttar Pradesh due to his strict administrative image and decisive actions against crime.
Ajay Pal Sharma is a 2011 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and currently serves as the Additional Police Commissioner in Prayagraj.
