Guwahati, May 12: Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Lok Sabha MP, announced on Monday that no Congress leaders, including newly elected legislators, will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP-led government in Assam on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi criticized the BJP for turning such ceremonies into politically charged events rather than serious constitutional occasions.
He pointed out that Prime Minister Modi recently advised citizens to avoid excessive spending, refrain from air travel, use public transport, and cut down on luxury expenses. However, the arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony suggest that these recommendations do not apply to the government.
Gogoi further claimed that the BJP leadership is failing to set a good example with their conduct. He expressed hope that the leadership would demonstrate accountability. If the government is sending such messages to the people of Assam and the country, it should reflect on why such extravagant events are held in the name of a swearing-in ceremony.
The Congress leader also alleged that constitutional values are often overlooked during these events. He noted that in recent years, platforms meant for taking oaths under the Constitution have gradually transformed into political stages, overshadowing constitutional values with election-related discussions.
He stated that the Congress will continue to play the role of a ‘constructive opposition’ and will raise issues concerning unemployed youth, local contractors, government employees, and the tribal population of Assam.
However, he emphasized that it would not be appropriate for Congress to participate in the BJP’s political program. The new BJP government, led by Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma, will take the oath at the veterinary college sports ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of several top NDA leaders on Tuesday.
