New Delhi, April 17: Congress MPs from South India have launched a strong critique against the central government regarding the notification for the Women’s Reservation Bill and the delimitation process. While several MPs have expressed their support for the bill, Congress MP Mallu Ravi stated, “Last night, the BJP government devised a new plan. Voting on this bill is scheduled for 4 PM today. We will see if they have separated the Women’s Reservation Bill from the delimitation bill. We will not vote in favor of this bill; we will oppose it. However, we support the Women’s Reservation Bill because it is our bill.”
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram remarked, “First of all, with elections approaching in two major states next week, why was this session called? What is the urgency? A matter that was passed in 2023 is suddenly being notified during this session. Nothing is clear or transparent. Everything appears to be a facade and vague. Moreover, what the government claims is not reflected in the fine print. I would compare it to an insurance salesman who first says he is selling an insurance policy and then mentions it is linked to monthly SIP investments. What is said while selling the policy is not visible in the fine print.”
Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy noted, “MP Tejasvi Surya made comments regarding the division of Telangana during the discussion on the delimitation and Women’s Reservation Bills in the Lok Sabha. Central Minister G. Kishan Reddy, representing Telangana, also supported these comments during the discussion. Both should apologize to the people of Telangana.”
DMK MP T. R. Baalu stated, “This has been ongoing for the past week. In fact, this issue has been raised for over a year. My leader brought this up a year ago, and it continues.”
Congress MP Saptagiri Shankar Ulaka expressed surprise, saying, “It is quite shocking. We thought this had already been notified, but it seems the bill passed in 2023 has not yet been notified. It appears that the notification was issued during the discussion of these three bills, raising questions about why it was done so late and what is actually happening.”
Telangana Congress MP Kadiyam Kavyya said, “During the discussion on the Women’s Reservation 131st Amendment Bill and the delimitation bill on Thursday, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya compared the division of Telangana to the India-Pakistan partition. We have demanded an apology and the removal of these comments from the parliamentary record. After years of struggle, the people of Telangana received their rightful state status. Central Minister G. Kishan Reddy is from Telangana; he has clarified his stance on this issue. As Congress MPs from Telangana, we demand an apology from that MP and the BJP.”
CPI MP P. Santosh emphasized, “Reservation for women is a necessity of the time, and we support it. It was unanimously passed by the Indian Parliament, and we all backed it. Unfortunately, the government is now trying to politicize it. It should not be linked to delimitation or other constitutional amendments. The fact is, if the government is genuinely serious about implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill, it should not be tied to any other conditions or criteria. That is our stance.”
Congress MP K. C. Venugopal stated, “Whenever an amendment to a law is presented, it is the government’s duty to ensure that the notification of that amendment is issued. Which amendment are you presenting? Which law are you amending? The notification was issued on Thursday, and now they claim, and the media will echo, that this is just a ‘technical error.’”
