Congress Leader Jitendra Singh Alwar Resigns After Assam Election Results

Guwahati, May 5: Senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh Alwar has resigned from his position as the party’s in-charge general secretary for Assam. This decision comes in the wake of the party’s disappointing performance in the recent assembly elections, where the BJP secured a significant victory.

In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh stated that he is stepping down with immediate effect, describing the election results as extremely disappointing. He acknowledged that despite the party’s efforts, they failed to meet the expectations of the people of Assam.

In his resignation letter, he wrote, “I hereby resign from the position of in-charge general secretary for Assam with immediate effect. The recent election results have been very disappointing, and I take full responsibility for this outcome.”

Singh expressed gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting him with this responsibility, as well as to the people of Assam, party workers, and leaders. He noted, “Despite our best efforts, we could not live up to the hopes of the people of Assam, whom we aimed to serve. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve and for the trust placed in me.”

He also mentioned his commitment to continue supporting the Congress party’s ideology and organizational work in any capacity in the future.

This resignation comes at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a significant victory in the Assam assembly elections. According to the Election Commission, the BJP won 82 out of 126 seats, securing a clear majority.

In contrast, the Congress managed to win only 19 seats, falling significantly behind. Regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) each won 10 seats. The AIUDF and Raijor Dal secured 2 seats each, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 1 seat.

With this substantial mandate, the BJP is set to form the government in Assam for the third consecutive time.
