Amritsar, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Shivani Sharma, a representative of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and former district president, has accused Saurabh Madan Mithu, the president of the Urban District Congress Committee, of forcibly entering her home, behaving aggressively, vandalizing property, and issuing threats to her life.
This incident has highlighted rifts within the Congress party in Amritsar. Following the altercation, Sharma filed a complaint against Mithu at a local police station, demanding strict legal action and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).
In an interview, Sharma recounted the events, stating, “Saurabh Madan Mithu arrived at my home with his armed associate. When my daughter informed me that ‘Uncle’ was here, I went downstairs and invited Saurabh in. Instead of entering, he became extremely aggressive, shouting and using foul language from outside.”
Sharma alleged that Mithu forcibly entered her residence, shoved her, and engaged in a physical altercation, resulting in her collar being torn. During this confrontation, he reportedly kicked over several flower pots in her courtyard.
The situation escalated when Sharma’s husband intervened and attempted to record the incident on his mobile phone. She claimed that Mithu threatened them while the video was being filmed, saying, “Do whatever you want, record the video; the police are in my pocket.”
Sharma believes the incident reflects deeper issues within the state Congress party, including internal conflicts and power struggles. She mentioned that she had previously resigned from her position as district president of the Women’s Congress due to ongoing mental harassment and pressure from Mithu.
She alleged that Mithu attempted to dictate her participation in political events and whom she should meet, leading to significant disagreements between them. Sharma further asserted that recent changes in the state Congress leadership have exacerbated these tensions.
“After the recent changes in the state Congress and the appointment of a new president, Saurabh Mithu was frustrated. When I posted a message supporting the new party leadership, he couldn’t tolerate it and came to my house to take out personal vendetta,” she explained.
Despite a long-standing familial relationship with Mithu, Sharma noted that he has lost respect for female leaders in the party, intoxicated by power. She emphasized her independence within the party, rejecting any notion that she could be controlled by another leader.
“I am an independent worker, not anyone’s puppet. If such behavior is tolerated against me in my own home, how can I raise my voice for justice for other women in the future?” she stated.
Shivani Sharma has informed senior party leaders and the Congress high command about the incident. She urged the police administration to conduct a fair investigation into her allegations and to take stringent legal action against the accused.
