Ranchi, May 19: The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee has called for the implementation of the Sarna religious code to ensure the independent religious identity of tribal communities during the ongoing census process in India.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, Congress leaders Keshav Mahto Kamlesh and Pradeep Yadav emphasized that over 12.5 million people in the country identify as followers of the tribal Sarna faith. However, they pointed out that the census forms do not include a code or column for their religion.
The Congress leaders stated that this demand has been longstanding and has been overlooked by the central government. They accused the government of not wanting to establish an independent religious and cultural identity for the tribal population.
Both the state Congress president and the leader of the legislative party assured that their party would continue to raise the issue of the Sarna religious code from the streets to the legislature. They also expressed concerns over the ongoing special intensive revision of the electoral rolls, alleging that a significant number of voters are being removed from the lists across the country.
They claimed that this process of illegally removing millions of voters’ names could impact democratic rights. The Congress party will closely monitor this initiative, which is set to begin in Jharkhand next month.
Furthermore, they announced that the party has initiated a campaign to ensure that voters’ names are secured in the electoral lists at the booth level. The Congress leaders also criticized the central government’s economic policies and rising inflation.
Pradeep Yadav highlighted the continuous increase in prices of essential commodities, including petrol and diesel, which is adding to the economic burden on the common people. He also referenced the alleged paper leak in the NEET examination, calling for a fair investigation. Yadav expressed concern over the ongoing discrepancies in the examination system, which could jeopardize students’ futures.
