Puducherry, March 6 : Lt.Governor Tamilisai Soundarararajan, who visited the Rock Beach here, where the Iconic pier partially collapsed after midnight last night, has assured to reconstruct it without causing any damages to its heritage. Talking to news persons, Dr Soundararajan said that steps in this direction would be taken in consultation with Chief Minister N Rangaswamy. The pier and the lights on it were an identity of Puducherry and it would be kept as it is without damaging the heritage for the future generations, she said the on government had allocated Rs 60 crores under the Sagarmala project to develop this area. When that works starts, the pier would also be reconstructed protecting its heritage, she added. The Lt Governor said that in olden days this area was a trade centre and added the heritage should be restored. Steps would be taken for ship transportation and tourism development under the sagarmala project. She appealed to the fishermen and others on the shore to be alert as the sea remains rough. Soundararajan also said that the Raj Nivas building is also weak and a request was forwarded to renovate it without losing its heritage. It is gratifying that the the on government had released flood relief for Puducherry, she said, adding it is the desire of the Centre that the on Territory of Puducherry should get everything. Oupalam legislator Anibal Kennedy, former AIADMK legislator Anbazhagana and officials accompanied her. Later, Chief Minister N Rangaswamy also visited the beach. It may be noted that the iconic pier, on which a large number of films including Hollywood film “Life of Pi” were shot, partially collapsed under the impact of huge waves due to the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.
