Beijing, February 27: The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce addressed questions from reporters regarding recent statements by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on February 25.
The reporter inquired about Greer’s comments indicating that the U.S. would advance its Section 301 investigation into China’s implementation of the Phase One economic and trade agreement, potentially leading to tariff-related actions.
In response, the spokesperson noted that the Phase One agreement took effect in early 2020. Since then, China has worked diligently to uphold the spirit of the agreement, despite challenges such as the pandemic’s impact, supply chain disruptions, and the global economic downturn. China has fulfilled its commitments to strengthen intellectual property rights protection and enhance the openness of financial and agricultural markets.
Conversely, the U.S. has tightened export controls on China and imposed restrictions on bilateral investments, thereby violating the spirit of the agreement and undermining the conditions for its implementation. China has clearly outlined these issues in a white paper.
The spokesperson added that since last year, China and the U.S. have engaged in five rounds of economic and trade consultations, achieving significant milestones. China hopes that the U.S. will view the implementation of the Phase One agreement objectively and rationally. China is keen to enhance cooperation with the U.S. However, if the U.S. escalates its investigations, China will take all necessary steps to protect its legal interests.
