New Delhi, March 16: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially appointed James Foster as their new fielding coach. He will collaborate closely with head coach Stephen Fleming, batting coach Michael Hussey, and bowling coach Eric Simmons.
Previously, Foster served as a fielding and assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) over several seasons. In his new role, he will also work closely with CSK’s wicketkeepers, including former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sanju Samson, who was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ in the recently concluded T20 World Cup.
The five-time IPL champions announced Foster’s appointment on the social media platform X, stating, “Welcome our fielding coach, James Foster. The former England wicketkeeper, with coaching experience across various teams, is now proudly starting this new journey with us.”
Born on April 15, 1980, in Essex, Foster made his international debut as a wicketkeeper-batsman in October 2001. He played seven Test matches for England, scoring 226 runs at an average of 25.11 across 12 innings, during which he took 17 catches and executed one stumping.
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), Foster played 11 matches, scoring 41 runs, and took 13 catches while stumping seven players. In five T20 matches, he scored 37 runs and dismissed six batsmen. Since retiring as a player in 2018, he has been heavily involved in coaching within franchise cricket.
Foster recently won the ILT20 title as head coach of Desert Vipers in January and was appointed as the assistant coach for Birmingham Phoenix in ‘The Hundred’ tournament. He has also worked with the coaching staff of both England and New Zealand at the international level.
Chennai Super Kings will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. They will then face Punjab Kings at home on April 3, followed by matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 5 and Delhi Capitals on April 11.
