Kohima, August 5: Central Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda assured on Wednesday that the central government is firmly standing with the Nagaland state government to address the situation arising from floods and landslides.
He stated that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working in continuous coordination with the state to ensure timely relief and necessary assistance reaches affected families.
Nadda visited landslide-affected areas in Mon town alongside Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, Phangnon Konyak.
He inspected the areas around Defense Colony and Techa Ward that were impacted by the landslides. Nadda met with the families of the deceased and also interacted with displaced individuals at the Konyak Union office.
Later, Nadda expressed on the social media platform ‘X’, “I convey the central government’s deep sympathy and unwavering commitment to the people of Mon district. Every possible assistance will be provided for relief and rehabilitation efforts. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central government stands firmly with the Nagaland government during this challenging time and is working sensitively to ensure that every affected family receives the necessary support.”
While speaking to the affected individuals, Nadda remarked that it is an extremely tragic and painful incident. He reassured them that they are not alone during this difficult time and that the central government is with them.
He emphasized that he has personally assessed the situation and is fully aware of the hardships people are facing after the disaster. Nadda assured that the central government will spare no effort in relief and rehabilitation work. He mentioned that a central team will also visit the area to assist in the relief efforts.
The minister conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s message to the affected families. He praised the district administration, led by the Deputy Commissioner, along with the Konyak Union, Konyak Students Union, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong for their efforts in the relief camps.
He also commended all rescue teams, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil organizations, and volunteers.
Due to heavy rainfall, several landslides occurred in the district, with Defense Colony and surrounding areas being the most affected. Many homes were damaged, and numerous families were displaced.
Road connectivity was disrupted in several locations, while electricity and drinking water supply were temporarily affected in some areas.
According to officials, the devastating landslides and sudden flooding in Mon district, Nagaland, were caused by continuous monsoon rains on July 19 and 20. These disasters resulted in multiple fatalities, extensive property damage, significant agricultural losses, and disrupted major roads.
On July 19, 83.95 mm of rainfall was recorded in the district, while the automatic weather station at Mon district headquarters noted a total of 341 mm of rainfall from July 19 to 31, indicating the severity of the monsoon.
