Celebrating National Unity Day: Honoring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patels Legacy

National Unity Day is celebrated on October 31 to honor Sardar Vallabhbhai Patels contributions to Indias unity and integrity.

New Delhi, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : National Unity Day is observed every year on October 31 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This day recognizes his significant role in promoting national and political integration in India. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining the nation’s sovereignty, peace, and integrity, while encouraging citizens to commit to unity in diversity.

The observance of this day was first initiated by the Indian government in 2014 to honor Patel’s remarkable contributions to nation-building. On October 31, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” initiative, aimed at fostering continuous and organized contact among people across various regions of the country, enhancing mutual understanding and connection.

Across the nation, events such as the “Run for Unity” are organized, where people actively participate. Government offices, schools, and institutions take the National Unity Pledge to uphold the unity and security of the country.

A grand celebration takes place every year at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, which is the tallest statue in the world, to mark Patel’s birthday. Prime Minister Modi is expected to participate in this year’s festivities as well.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, played a crucial role in the national integration process after independence in 1947. He was tasked with unifying over 560 princely states, which constituted about 40% of India’s area and population. Under the Indian Independence Act, the rulers of these states were given the option to join either India or Pakistan, or to remain independent.

To prevent fragmentation, Patel employed diplomatic negotiations, persuasion, and, when necessary, strict administrative measures. Through his leadership in the Home Department, he successfully integrated these states by or shortly after August 15, 1947, ensuring the territorial integrity of modern India. His efforts averted potential disintegration and laid the foundation for a unified democratic republic. National Unity Day is celebrated in memory of these significant achievements.
