Celebrating Kajari Teej: A Festival of Tradition and Devotion in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, August 31: The festival of Kajari Teej was celebrated with great enthusiasm, faith, and reverence across Purvanchal and Uttar Pradesh on Monday. Women in Kashi, in particular, displayed a unique excitement and joy for this occasion.

On the eve of Kajari Teej, women observed a night vigil and enjoyed traditional delicacies. They also sang folk songs to mark the celebration. On this auspicious day, women adorn themselves with elaborate attire and fast for the long life of their husbands. The festival aims to promote the folk traditions and stories of Purvanchal, helping the younger generation understand these customs and practices.

In an interview, Swarnima Sharma shared that Kajari Teej is a significant festival for the people of Purvanchal and Bihar. It showcases folk songs and traditions, reflecting rural lifestyles through music. Women dress up beautifully, applying henna on their hands, and organize singing and dancing events throughout the night.

She emphasized that Kajari Teej serves as a means to connect the younger generation with their traditions, teaching them how to preserve their cultural heritage and continue these rituals. Speaking about Ganesh Chaturthi, she noted that it is primarily celebrated by mothers praying for the long life, good health, and bright future of their children, especially sons. Mothers without sons also worship Lord Ganesha, seeking blessings for a child. The fast on Ganesh Chaturthi is strictly observed without water, concluding with a prayer in the evening.

Shweta Sharma added that Kajari Teej holds great significance for women. On this day, they celebrate the festival dressed in their finest attire, praying for their husbands’ longevity and health. Women engage in group singing and festivities. She mentioned that both Kajari Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi are important, as the former is for husbands while the latter is for sons.
