Kolkata, August 11: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested another suspect in the murder case of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar. This incident is linked to the violence that erupted following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The arrested individual has been identified as Vishal Pal, also known as Gopal Das. CBI officials apprehended him in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district. According to authorities, he had been on the run for an extended period.
Last week, the CBI also captured another fugitive, Arup Das, from Assam in connection with this case.
On July 1 of this year, a special CBI court in Kolkata framed charges against 19 individuals in the Abhijit Sarkar murder case. Among those charged are former Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor Swapna Samaddar. The CBI has interrogated both multiple times.
Abhijit Sarkar, a BJP worker from the Kankurgachi area in North Kolkata, was allegedly murdered by Trinamool Congress workers after the results of the 2021 Assembly elections were announced. Family members claimed he was killed after being subjected to harassment.
Based on the family’s complaint, the Narkeldanga police initiated a preliminary investigation and filed a charge sheet against 15 individuals. Subsequently, under the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation. The agency filed an additional charge sheet, bringing the total number of accused to 20. This case also led to the arrest of the then station officer and a female sub-inspector.
During the hearing of the bail application for these police officials, the court raised concerns about how society can function if protectors turn into predators.
The family of the deceased BJP worker has expressed frustration over the slow pace of the CBI investigation.
After the formation of the new government in the state, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that no one involved in the post-election violence of 2021 would be spared.
