Kolkata, August 24: The Calcutta High Court‘s single judge bench has requested a detailed report from the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal regarding all FIRs filed against Sumit Roy, the personal assistant of Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Justice Sougata Bhattacharya directed the DGP’s office to submit the report by the next hearing date on September 10. The bench also ruled that the police cannot take any punitive action against Roy until then.
Furthermore, the court stated that if the police attempt any coercive action in the meantime, Roy has the right to bring this to the court’s attention through his lawyer.
On Monday, Roy’s attorney informed the court that his client has been cooperating with the state police in all cases filed against him and has appeared whenever summoned by the investigating officers.
The attorney noted that the first FIR against Roy was registered on June 5, followed by a second FIR on June 16, with additional cases filed thereafter. He alleged that the police have been harassing his client by filing cases almost daily.
The court has requested details of all FIRs registered against Roy by the state police thus far.
On the same day, the state government’s lawyer and Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Majumdar appealed to the Calcutta High Court to stay the proceedings, citing a similar case pending in the Supreme Court against Roy.
He also informed the court that a sum of ₹20 crore was transferred through Roy to a special bank account.
The state police have leveled two main allegations against Roy: one related to land grabbing and the other concerning irregularities in recruitment during Mamata Banerjee’s government.
