Kolkata, August 24: The Calcutta High Court has granted immediate hearing on petitions from both factions of the Trinamool Congress regarding the celebration of the foundation day of the student wing, ‘Trinamool Chhatra Parishad’ (TMCP).
Both factions sought permission to celebrate the foundation day at the same location in central Kolkata on August 28. They aim to hold the event on Mayo Road, a venue that has hosted similar events in the past.
Now, both factions have approached the Calcutta High Court for the necessary permissions. Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s single bench has accepted the petitions from both groups. The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
The TMCP has a history of organizing its foundation day celebrations on Mayo Road. Previously, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, there were no issues. However, the current situation is different as the party has split into two factions. It remains to be seen which faction will receive court approval to hold the event on Mayo Road.
Earlier, on July 21, complications arose regarding the venue for parallel events organized by both factions on Martyrs’ Day. The faction led by Mamata Banerjee was denied permission to hold their event at the traditional site in front of CESC House near Esplanade in central Kolkata. Following court approval, the faction led by the former Chief Minister had to limit their rally to a smaller gathering in front of Birla Planetarium in central Kolkata.
