Mumbai, March 10: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecom operator, has launched an initiative that is set to empower women across India. This new service, known as BSNL Kavach, allows female subscribers to recharge their phone numbers at retail outlets without disclosing their personal numbers.
This announcement was made on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2026. The BSNL Kavach system works by providing women with a unique Kavach number via SMS. They can then share this number with retail outlets to complete their recharges, ensuring their personal information remains private.
While many Indians now use UPI platforms and telecom apps for recharging, a significant number still prefer visiting stores, either due to a lack of tech-savviness or a preference for cash transactions.
BSNL revealed this initiative through a post on its social media account on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Your number is personal. Your safety is powerful. With the BSNL Kavach Number, recharge without revealing your real number. Empowering women with secure and private connectivity.”
This innovative solution highlights BSNL’s commitment to consumer safety and privacy. Currently, no private telecom operator offers a similar service, and this initiative may inspire others to follow suit in the future.
