
Pune, March 7: In an exciting showdown at the 41st PSPB Inter-Unit Hockey Tournament, defending champions Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and runner-up Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) secured victories in their respective matches on Friday. The event took place at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Pune, where both teams earned three crucial points.
With this win, BPCL now leads the standings with six points from two victories. Meanwhile, IOCL follows closely with three points from one win, tied for second place with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Engineers India Limited (EIL) has faced two consecutive defeats and has yet to score.
On Friday, BPCL edged out ONGC with a score of 4-3. The match began with BPCL trailing after Gurjot Singh (17′) scored a field goal for ONGC.
However, BPCL quickly turned the game around, netting three goals. The equalizer came from 2002 Olympic medalist Varun Kumar (22′) via a penalty corner, followed by field goals from 2012 Olympian Tushar Khandekar (37′) and Vishwas Ji (45′), giving BPCL a 3-1 lead.
ONGC’s Jagwant Singh (52′) reduced the deficit with a goal, but India’s current international player Rajinder Singh (56′) responded with another goal for BPCL, bringing the score to 4-2. In the dying minutes, ONGC’s Bikash Toppo (59′) scored again, finalizing the match at 4-3.
In the day’s second match, IOCL defeated EIL 2-0, with goals from Roshan Minz (14′) and Sunil Yadav (54′) ensuring a complete points haul for IOCL.
