Body of BJP Leader Chandranath Rath Taken to Residence for Last Rites

Kolkata, May 7: The body of Chandranath Rath, a close aide to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was transported to his residence in Chandipur, East Midnapore, on Thursday evening for his final rites.

After a post-mortem at Barasat Medical College and Hospital, Rath’s relatives and close associates departed for Chandipur with the body. A large crowd gathered outside his residence to pay their last respects.

The body was draped in the national flag, and friends, supporters, and local BJP workers paid tribute to him. Supporters present at the scene chanted slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”

Senior BJP leaders from the district also arrived in Chandipur to honor Rath. Newly elected BJP legislators from the area were also in attendance.

The body was initially placed about 100 meters from Rath’s home before being taken to his family’s residence. His cremation was scheduled for Thursday night. Supporters demanded severe punishment for those responsible for his murder.

Rath was killed on Wednesday night in Madhyagram, North 24 Parganas district. Unknown assailants fired at his vehicle at close range, resulting in his immediate death.

Suvendu Adhikari and other senior BJP leaders visited the hospital on Wednesday night. BJP workers staged a prolonged protest outside the hospital, accusing Trinamool Congress supporters of involvement and demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits.

As of Thursday evening, no arrests had been made in the case.

West Bengal’s Director General of Police, S.N. Gupta, visited the hospital on Wednesday night, speaking with Rath’s family members and BJP leaders, including Adhikari.

Police seized a four-wheeler allegedly used in the crime on Wednesday night, while the motorcycle used by the attackers was recovered on Thursday. Investigators discovered that both vehicles had fake license plates.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the murder, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined.

The Trinamool Congress issued a statement on Wednesday night condemning Rath’s murder and called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry under judicial supervision.
