Guwahati, May 4: In a remarkable victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Piyush Hazarika has won the Jagiroad (SC) assembly seat in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Hazarika secured 155,129 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Bulbul Das, by a significant margin of 93,584 votes. Das managed to garner only 61,545 votes in this election.
The Jagiroad assembly seat, reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), is one of the 126 assembly seats in Assam. It falls under the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency and is considered politically significant. The area features a diverse mix of both urban and rural voters.
Looking at the voter statistics, the total number of voters in this constituency is approximately 223,000. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there were 222,110 registered voters, with 316 polling stations. That election saw a voter turnout of 81.69%.
In the 2016 assembly elections, voter enthusiasm was notably high, with a turnout of 85.29%. This time, the region also witnessed strong participation, which played a crucial role in shaping the election results.
Overall, the 2026 election results reaffirm that the BJP maintains a stronghold in the Jagiroad assembly constituency.
It is noteworthy that the Jagiroad assembly seat first held elections in 1978, where Congress candidate Prakash Chandra Dali emerged victorious. Since then, a total of 11 assembly elections have taken place in this constituency.
BJP leader Piyush Hazarika has successfully retained his seat for the third consecutive time. He first won in 2016, followed by a second victory in 2021, and now in 2026.
With this win, Assam is poised to see the BJP government once again.
