New Delhi, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : In a pointed attack on the Congress party, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj questioned the silence of its leadership regarding sexual harassment allegations against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. During a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Swaraj highlighted that Akoijam was dismissed from his position on October 9, 2026, following serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
Swaraj revealed that in May 2026, eleven students filed complaints against Akoijam, prompting JNU to form an internal committee under the Protection of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. The committee conducted a thorough investigation based on evidence, witness testimonies, and the accounts of the victims, leading to Akoijam’s termination. “This action raises serious questions,” she stated.
The BJP MP expressed concern over the disturbing nature of the allegations, which included inappropriate sexual inquiries directed at female students and accusations of unwanted physical contact. Reports also indicated that Akoijam had summoned students to his home late at night for academic assessments, which included a viva that allegedly lasted until 11:40 PM.
Swaraj challenged Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party, asking, “Is the end of patriarchy merely a political slogan for you?” She accused the Congress of hypocrisy, suggesting that their commitment to feminism begins and ends with hashtags, failing to hold individuals accountable for their actions.
Notably, since the allegations surfaced, the Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, has remained silent. “In Sanskrit, we say, ‘Mounam swikriti lakshanam’—silence indicates acceptance. By remaining silent, you are endorsing the behavior of the accused,” Swaraj asserted.
She further questioned the Congress’s commitment to respecting women, asking whether it was merely a slogan rather than a policy. “Has the outcry from eleven students not reached you, Rahul Gandhi? Or have you turned their concerns into a trivial joke?” she concluded, emphasizing the need for accountability and action from the Congress party.
