New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena strongly criticised AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday for his remarks against RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Owaisi had commented on the issue commonly referred to as ‘Love Jihad’. Both parties said Owaisi neither has the moral nor the political right to question the RSS chief.
Addressing the Stree Shakti Dialogue programme in Bhopal, Mohan Bhagwat said that incidents labelled as ‘Love Jihad’ mainly arise from a lack of communication and moral values within families.
He argued that any serious effort to prevent such cases must begin at home.
Owaisi challenged both the basis and the terminology used by Bhagwat, stating that adults have the legal and constitutional right to choose their life partners.
He said, “If ‘Love Jihad’ really exists, present statistics in Parliament. Define the term and show records of the past 11 years.”
Responding to Owaisi’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdev said, “Owaisi has neither the moral nor political right to question RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Love Jihad occurs when a Muslim youth or a person of another religion deceitfully marries Hindu girls, even adopting Hindu names to do so.”
He emphasised that this concept should not be confused with interfaith marriages.
Shahdev further added, “There is a clear difference between love marriage and Love Jihad. In love marriage, individuals have the freedom to follow their religion. In Love Jihad, the husband begins pressuring his wife for religious conversion from the day after the marriage. Love Jihad is a harsh reality, and our government is strict on this issue.”
Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC also supported the RSS chief, stating that Bhagwat’s comments were being misinterpreted.
She said, “Mohan Bhagwat says that if we establish good values within our society and family structure, marriages will be strong. To eliminate other thought processes, we need a strong foundation of ideology, value system, culture, and civilisation.”
She added, “Owaisi has misunderstood every word of the RSS chief. He asked for data on Love Jihad. Love Jihad is when a boy deceives a girl into marriage and tarnishes the institution of marriage.”
Shaina clarified that the issue is not about opposing marriages between consenting adults from different backgrounds.
She said, “Owaisi seems to suggest that adults from different cultural backgrounds cannot marry. Who says that? We say that deceiving a girl is wrong. People from different cultural backgrounds can marry. That is the beauty of unity in diversity.”
