Thiruvananthapuram, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : The political landscape in Kerala is heating up as the BJP targets Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In response to a social media post from Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, BJP National General Secretary K. Surendran challenged Congress’s claims of upholding democracy and secularism, accusing them of hypocrisy.
Surendran took to the platform X to express his astonishment at Satheesan’s defense of Gandhi, labeling it as a blatant contradiction. He questioned how Congress could claim to protect democracy when, during the Emergency, civil liberties were suspended, censorship was imposed on the press, and political opponents were jailed.
He further scrutinized Congress’s stance on secularism, asking where the party’s concerns were when Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave their homeland. Surendran also brought up Congress’s long-standing position on the triple talaq issue, suggesting a lack of genuine commitment to secular values.
Additionally, Surendran referenced a case involving former Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami, questioning the party’s response when Gopalaswami expressed concerns about the alleged political ties of Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla.
His remarks were a direct response to Satheesan’s assertion that Congress and Rahul Gandhi are defenders of democracy and secularism. In his post, Satheesan challenged BJP leaders, including Rajeev Chandrasekhar, to honestly claim their commitment to secularism.
Satheesan accused Chandrasekhar of making personal attacks against Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha and stated that neither Congress nor Kerala’s civil society would accept such behavior. He emphasized that making baseless accusations while holding a significant political position reflects political bankruptcy.
He also raised concerns regarding the credibility of the Election Commission and the impartiality of autonomous institutions, claiming that the Constitution and democratic institutions are being exploited for communal interests. Satheesan asserted that Gandhi and Congress are vocal against such injustices.
He concluded by stating that the BJP should focus on genuine issues affecting the public rather than making hollow claims and implementing anti-people policies. The exchange highlights the growing tensions between the two parties in the lead-up to upcoming elections in the state.
