Jammu, February 3: A significant uproar occurred in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday as several legislators from both the ruling and opposition parties staged protests over critical issues.
Two BJP legislators walked out of the assembly, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s responses to their queries regarding the Omar Abdullah administration. Meanwhile, members of the ruling National Conference (NC) protested outside the assembly, demanding action against attacks on Kashmiris outside the Union Territory and the restoration of statehood.
BJP legislators Rajiv Jasrotia and Pawan Gupta left the assembly, voicing their discontent with the government’s “unsatisfactory and evasive answers.” Following Jasrotia’s lead, Gupta joined the protest, showing solidarity with his party colleague.
This walkout coincided with ongoing protests both inside and outside the assembly, where legislators are demanding concrete actions and clear answers from the government on issues affecting their constituencies. Outside, NC members continued their demonstration, focusing on the safety of Kashmiris and the restoration of statehood.
In another development, Sajjad Gani Lone, president of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference and a legislator, proposed three significant amendments during the Lieutenant Governor’s speech. These amendments addressed concerns regarding the safety of Kashmiris, regularization of daily wage workers, and age relaxation for civil service candidates.
According to the assembly secretariat, Lone expressed disappointment over the lack of condemnation for attacks on Kashmiri students, traders, and vendors in various states and Union Territories. He also called for the regularization of daily wage workers, a long-standing demand among employees in Jammu and Kashmir.
