BJP Leader Tarun Chugh Criticizes Bhagwant Mann Government for Rising Violence in Punjab
BJPs Tarun Chugh condemns Punjabs rising violence and calls for investigations into recent murders and drug mafia activities.

New Delhi, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : Tarun Chugh, a member of the Rajya Sabha and BJP’s central office in-charge, addressed the media in Sangrur, Punjab, on Friday, raising serious concerns about the escalating violence in the state. He pointed to the ongoing murders, grenade attacks on police stations, and the killings of whistleblowers who speak out against the drug mafia as failures of the Bhagwant Mann government.
Chugh referenced the recent murder of Vikramjeet in Batala, accusing the government of failing to control the drug trade and protect its citizens. He demanded that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be called in to investigate these incidents and apprehend those responsible. The BJP has pledged to eradicate drugs from Punjab by December 31, 2029, if they come to power.
The situation in Punjab has become increasingly dire, according to Chugh. He noted that not only are murders rampant, but grenades are being thrown at police stations. Whistleblowers, who have attempted to expose drug trafficking, are being targeted. He mentioned Gulzar Singh, who was driven to suicide after being threatened for revealing the drug trade in the area. Mohanjeet was reportedly taken by police and warned not to mention the mafia. The latest victim, Jota, who had been a whistleblower himself, was shot dead in broad daylight despite calling for help.
Jota’s father has alleged that local Aam Aadmi Party MLA Singla is involved in these incidents. Following recent events, there is a palpable atmosphere of fear across Punjab. Chugh stated that the police, instead of protecting the public, are leaving them vulnerable to the mafia. He described the government’s response as a “horrific situation,” criticizing a recent high-level meeting called by the government as mere theatrics.
Families are suffering, and children are dying from drug abuse, yet Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann seems preoccupied with meetings, according to Chugh. He expressed disbelief that Punjab’s Finance Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, appears to be defending the actions of drug traffickers. He questioned Cheema’s commitment to fighting drugs, asking why he was not present during crucial moments when drugs were being seized.
Chugh concluded that the people of Punjab are living in fear while the Mann government is distracted by serving the interests of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.
