Bolpur, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : A BJP leader was shot dead in Bolpur, located in West Bengal‘s Birbhum district, on the night of September 27. The victim, identified as 47-year-old Chandan Bhalla, served as the party’s mandal president.
Witnesses reported that Bhalla was shot at close range while he was on the street in the Trishulpatty area of Ward 12. Following the attack, two assailants on a motorcycle fled the scene. Bhalla’s elder brother suspects that some BJP workers from Nanur may be involved in the incident. His wife, Shyamoli Bhalla, revealed that Chandan had left home on his bike to show a plot of land for sale when he was attacked.
The murder of a ruling party leader has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a significant police presence in the area. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage in hopes of identifying the perpetrators, although no official comments have been made by police regarding the incident.
Gaurachandra Bhalla, the deceased’s brother, stated, “They called my brother and shot him. Two individuals on a bike came, fired, and escaped. The bullet struck him directly in the head. My brother was the booth president of the BJP. Earlier that morning, some BJP members had visited our home from the Nanur police station. I suspect this could be their doing. We want the culprits to be punished.”
Neither the family nor the police have disclosed any information about who may have summoned Chandan before the shooting. Sources indicate that there have been no political murders in Birbhum since the political landscape in the state shifted.
Sumit Mandal, a BJP leader in Bolpur, expressed his dismay, saying, “This is a very unfortunate incident. He was a long-time worker with us, and we participated in many political programs together. However, who committed this act remains to be investigated. Given that the BJP is in power in the state, it raises questions about how someone could be killed for being part of the party. Therefore, a thorough investigation is essential, and I urge the police administration to conduct it properly.”
