Bengaluru, April 7: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed strong objections to the controversial remarks made by Mallikarjun Kharge in Assam. A delegation from the Karnataka BJP met with the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) M.A. Saleem to file a formal complaint against Kharge.
BJP leaders are demanding Kharge’s immediate arrest. They allege that during his election campaign in Assam, Kharge compared the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to “poisonous snakes,” which they claim is an inflammatory and provocative statement.
The complaint states that such comments could pose a threat to the safety of BJP and RSS workers nationwide. BJP leaders also emphasized that as the president of a national party, Kharge should make statements responsibly, as such remarks can have far-reaching consequences.
The delegation referenced various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) — 196, 197, 299, and 353 — arguing that these provisions relate to promoting animosity between communities, acting against national unity, hurting religious sentiments, and inciting violence or fear. They have called for immediate legal action under these sections.
Additionally, the BJP cited the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Shaheen Abdullah vs. Union of India (2022) case, which directed law enforcement agencies to take cognizance of hate speech cases.
BJP leaders also expressed concerns about law and order in Karnataka, stating that such remarks could encourage anti-social elements. They accused Kharge of a series of alleged anti-RSS statements, referencing previous comments made by state minister Priyank Kharge.
As of now, there has been no official response from Congress or Mallikarjun Kharge regarding this matter.
