Kolkata, May 4: In a thrilling electoral contest in West Bengal’s Jorasanko assembly seat, BJP candidate Vijay Ojha emerged victorious, defeating TMC’s Vijay Upadhyay. Ojha secured a total of 52,868 votes, while his closest rival Upadhyay garnered 47,071 votes, resulting in a margin of 5,797 votes.
Jorasanko is a general category assembly constituency that falls under the Kolkata North Lok Sabha area, located in the heart of Kolkata. Established in 1951, it has participated in all 17 assembly elections held in the state. This constituency comprises 11 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is entirely urban, with no rural voters.
Historically, the Congress party dominated this seat, winning 11 times. The All India Forward Bloc and the Janata Party also achieved victory once each in 1952 and 1977, respectively. The political landscape shifted in 1998 when Mamata Banerjee broke away from Congress to form the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Since 2001, TMC has won this seat five consecutive times, although the contests have often been closely contested. In the 2021 elections, TMC’s Vivek Gupta defeated BJP’s Meena Devi Purohit by a margin of 13 percent, with a voter turnout of 50 percent. In 2016, TMC’s Smita Bakshi won against BJP’s Rahul (Biswajit) Sinha by a 6 percent margin, with a turnout of 54 percent.
The scenario in Lok Sabha elections has been somewhat different. In the last three parliamentary elections, TMC faced challenges from BJP in this assembly area. The margin of victory in 2014 was 16,482 votes, which decreased to 3,882 in 2019, only to rise again to 7,401 votes later. However, since the formation of the Kolkata North Lok Sabha seat in 2009, TMC has won all parliamentary elections.
