New Delhi, May 5: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has regained a majority in the Puducherry Assembly elections. In light of this victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has tasked two senior leaders with the responsibility of selecting the leader of the legislative party in Puducherry.
The BJP’s parliamentary board has appointed Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and party in-charge Nirmal Kumar Surana as central observers for this process. Both leaders will play a crucial role in electing the legislative party leader in the coming days.
The assembly elections in Puducherry took place on April 9. The NDA, led by the All India N.R. Congress, competed against the Congress-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the DMK, which also fielded candidates. In this election, the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) secured 12 seats, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won 5, the BJP obtained 4, the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam got 2, while the Congress, AIADMK, Neyam Makkal Kazhagam (NMK), and three independent candidates each won 1 seat.
According to the seat-sharing agreement made on March 23, the Indian National Congress and the DMK agreed to contest 17 and 13 seats, respectively. However, the Congress had already fielded candidates in the five seats allocated to the DMK, leading to a friendly competition in those constituencies.
It is noteworthy that, in addition to the 30 elected seats in the Puducherry Assembly, three members are nominated by the Lieutenant Governor. This time, there were a total of 950,311 voters in Puducherry, comprising 446,361 men, 503,810 women, and 140 third-gender voters. A record 294 candidates contested in this election, which saw an unprecedented voter turnout of 89.87%, the highest ever recorded for assembly elections in this Union Territory.
