Bhubaneswar, May 1: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) announced on Friday its plan to launch a ‘Women’s Rights Campaign’ from May 10 to May 25 across all constituencies in the state. This initiative is in response to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) alleged anti-women policies and its failure to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill.
During a press conference at the party headquarters, BJD leaders criticized the BJP for misleading the public by falsely accusing opposition parties of being anti-women regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill.
BJD leaders stated that although the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, the BJP has only pretended to support it without taking any real action for its implementation.
Speaking to the media, senior BJD leader and opposition whip Pramila Malik highlighted how the BJP called a special session of Parliament to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill, linking it to the delimitation bill. She pointed out that after the bill failed in Parliament, the BJP is now calling special sessions in state assemblies to falsely accuse opposition parties.
Malik emphasized that the BJP’s procrastination in implementing the already passed Women’s Reservation Bill has become apparent to the public. All political parties, including the BJD, supported the bill at the time of its passage in 2023 and continue to do so. She accused the BJP of trying to push the Women’s Reservation Bill into uncertainty under the guise of delimitation.
The BJD leader alleged that the BJP is organizing public outrage rallies to present itself as a pro-women party while branding opposition parties as anti-women. She insisted that women across the country are well aware of the ground realities and cannot be misled.
Malik asserted that the BJP is the only party unwilling to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill until the number of seats in Parliament and state assemblies increases, reflecting its patriarchal and anti-women mindset. Therefore, to expose the BJP’s anti-women attitude, the BJD will conduct the Women’s Rights Campaign from May 10 to May 25.
