Antalya (Turkey), April 15 : The Indian women’s tennis team defeated Indonesia 2-1 to register the first win at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I — after suffering two losses in a row. India held an early 1-0 lead when Rutuja Bhosale defeated Beatrice Gumulya 6-4, 6-1 in the first singles match on Thursday. In the second match, India’s top ranked women’s singles player Ankita Raina registered a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Aldila Sutjiadi and gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead over Indonesia. In the doubles rubber, Riya Bhatia and Sowjanya Bavisetti lost 6-4, 7(9)-6(7), 2-6 to Jessy Rompies and Aldila Sutjiadi. Earlier, India suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of China and Japan in its first two ties. With the a win over Indonesia, India stand fourth in the points table with one win from three ties. Japan and China are placed on top with three wins in as many ties. Indonesia and New Zealand are fifth and sixth respectively with no win from three ties. Only the top two teams of Group I will be promoted to the play-offs and the bottom two teams will be sent to Asia-Oceania group-2. BAV MR
