Bears Eye Potential Trade for All-Pro DT Dexter Lawrence

Chicago, April 7: It’s not every day that an All-Pro defensive tackle requests a trade, but that’s exactly what happened on Monday. The Chicago Bears should seriously consider this opportunity.

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and will not attend the team’s offseason training this week, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. Lawrence is seeking a new contract and is prepared to play elsewhere if he cannot secure one in New York.

ESPN sources confirm that Giants All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and will not participate in the team’s offseason workout program that begins Tuesday.

Lawrence, a first-round pick in 2019, has established himself as one of the elite defensive tackles in the league over the past several years. He has earned Pro Bowl honors three times and made Second-Team All-Pro twice. In 2024, Lawrence recorded impressive stats with nine sacks and eight tackles for loss, both career highs, despite appearing in only 12 games. Although his statistics dipped in 2025, Lawrence still brings a dominant presence to the defensive line.

While Giants general manager Joe Schoen has publicly expressed his commitment to retaining Lawrence, the Bears should be among the first teams to inquire about his asking price. Coming off an 11-6 season and an NFC North title, Chicago struggled significantly on the defensive line last year and is still in search of a game-changer in the middle, despite signing former Pro Bowler Grady Jarrett last offseason.

Lawrence will turn 29 later this year and will demand a lucrative contract. The Bears currently have just under $300,000 in salary cap space, but general manager Ryan Poles would be remiss not to explore an enticing package for the Giants. With three picks in the top 60 of the 2026 NFL Draft, Chicago has valuable assets for a potential trade. Lawrence is a player who elevates those around him and would address a significant issue within the Bears’ defense.

We’ll see if any developments occur regarding Lawrence, but it is hoped that the Bears are in the mix for this significant acquisition as they aim for greater success in 2026.
