Dhaka: The participation of Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026 remains uncertain amid growing speculations. Fast bowler Shoriful Islam has stated that players can only focus on their performance as decisions regarding the team’s involvement are beyond their control.
Speaking to the media after winning the ‘Player of the Season’ award in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Shoriful told the Daily Kiran, “Our job is to perform in the matches. Whether we go to the World Cup or not, it is not in our hands.”
He emphasised that players should not let speculation distract them from their primary responsibility on the field. “As players, our responsibility is to think about how we can improve our performance. Everyone tries to give their best, and I am doing the same,” he added.
Shoriful acknowledged that uncertainty before a major global tournament can be challenging but reiterated that such decisions rest with the cricket authorities, not the players. “The decision about going to the World Cup has been taken by our cricket administrators. We respect that. There is no benefit in discussing matters beyond our control. We don’t know what will happen next, so it is better to focus on the game instead of worrying about it,” he said.
Recently, Bangladesh clarified that it would not send its team to play matches in India during the T20 World Cup 2026. Citing security concerns amid deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested the relocation of their matches to Sri Lanka. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) reiterated on Wednesday that the T20 World Cup would proceed as scheduled, with Bangladesh’s matches to be played in India.
