Bangladesh floods: 26 lakh people affected, 21 dead

Flood has affected 18 districts in the country including Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Jamalpur, Rajshahi, Faridpur and Feni. Large parts of Kurigram, Shariatpur and Sunamganj districts remain under water due to floods.  

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management more than 26 lakh people have been affected by floods in the country. 21 people have died so far due to floods.

Relief measures have been taken up by the government in the flood affected areas. It has set up 1443 flood relief centres where more than 61 thousand people have taken shelter. Close to 600 additional medical centres have also been set up in these districts. 

In the Brahmaputra basin rivers are above danger level at 17 points, in the Ganges basin at 4 points and in Meghna basin at 3 points.  According to the latest flood bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) issued at 9 a.m. on Monday, water level showed an increase over 67 points along the 101 observation points across the four river basins in the country. 

Dhaleswari at Elasin, Atrai at Baghabari and Padma at Goalundo were flowing more than 100 centimetre above the danger mark on Monday morning. 

Rains also continued to lash several parts of the country. Chilmari, Dhaka , Tangail, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Sunamganj, Bhairab bazar and Narsingdi received rainfall in excess of 100 mm on Monday. 

The Met department of Bangladesh has predicted  light to moderate rain at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi,Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram & Sylhet divisions & at many places over  Khulna and  Barisal divisions in the country.
