Bangladesh Faces Economic Crisis Amid Ongoing Conflict in West Asia

Dhaka, March 8: The ongoing conflict in West Asia is severely impacting Bangladesh. Iran has launched deadly attacks on several facilities in Qatar, leading to significant disruptions in Asian supply chains. This situation poses a major crisis for countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. Economic analysts and citizens in Bangladesh have shared their concerns with news agencies.

Legal expert and economic analyst Khundakar Hasan Shariar stated, “Given the current war situation, this is a critical issue, especially for countries like ours. Bangladesh is significantly affected. I believe we have an important role to play. As you know, Bangladesh is under considerable pressure… Currently, we do not see any immediate shortages, but we must remain vigilant.”

Shariar noted a decline in Bangladesh-India foreign policy cooperation over the past 17-18 months. He expressed concern that this has led to a lack of immediate support from friendly nations, which was previously expected.

Local resident Abdul Mannan highlighted the impact of the oil crisis, saying, “The oil crisis will increase transportation costs. Consequently, the prices of daily necessities will rise, forcing people to spend more. This will hit middle-class families the hardest. Although oil is still available, there is growing anxiety about how long this will last.”

Mannan added, “The oil crisis will raise transportation fares, which will, in turn, increase the prices of essential goods. While oil remains available, panic is spreading among the people.”

Farhana, a student at a private university, expressed her concerns, stating, “I believe this price increase is very detrimental to us. The entire world is heading towards recession.”

Following the Iranian attacks, Qatar has halted LNG supply and production, causing gas prices to surge in the Asian market. This has created a significant energy crisis for Bangladesh, which heavily relied on Qatar for its energy supply.
