Ujjain witnessed a grand gathering of devotees at the world-renowned Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple on Monday morning, coinciding with the Tritiya Tithi of Magh Maas Krishna Paksha. Devotees lined up from late night to witness the special Bhasma Aarti and have the darshan of Baba Mahakal.
In the early Brahma Muhurta around 4 am, Baba Mahakal was adorned in an extraordinary manner with bhasma (sacred ash) and bhang. His forehead was decorated with the moon and lotus motifs, creating a divine spectacle that filled the devotees with joy. The temple premises resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal” as thousands gathered for the auspicious occasion.
According to belief, bhasma is Lord Shiva’s favourite ornament symbolising the cycle of life and death and his formless nature. Participating in this aarti is said to bring relief from troubles, prosperity, and ultimately moksha (liberation). Devotees from across the world come to Ujjain to take part in this unique ritual, which has been carried out for centuries with thousands attending daily.
The Bhasma Aarti of Mahakaleshwar Temple is considered unparalleled globally. It takes place during the Brahma Muhurta, and the sacred ash used is freshly collected from cremation grounds. The bhasma is prepared by mixing ashes from wood of peepal, palash, shami, bel, and gohari trees, enhancing its spiritual significance.
Religious customs dictate that during this time, Mahakal exists in his formless state. Women traditionally cover their heads with a veil or dupatta and do not enter the sanctum sanctorum but can view the deity from outside or through special arrangements.
The ritual includes the blowing of conch shells, beating of drums, and chanting of mantras as the bhasma is applied to the deity. Following the bhasma application, Baba Mahakal is bathed with Panchamrit and adorned with other ornaments.
