New Delhi, March 1: Bronchial asthma is a condition characterized by difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, coughing, and wheezing. At times, it may feel as though breathing is obstructed. This issue can worsen with changing weather, exposure to cold air, dust, pollen, or allergens.
According to Ayurveda, asthma is primarily linked to an imbalance of the Kapha and Vata doshas, leading to inflammation and increased mucus in the airways. However, it can be effectively managed through a proper routine, diet, and some simple Ayurvedic remedies.
First and foremost, dietary considerations are crucial. Asthma patients should consume light and warm meals at night. It is advisable to avoid cold, stale, or heavy foods such as yogurt, bananas, fried items, overly sour foods, and cold beverages, as these can increase Kapha. Warm soups, ginger-infused water, turmeric milk, and lukewarm water are beneficial. Drinking lukewarm water throughout the day can also help keep the airways clear.
Several home remedies can provide relief. For instance, taking 3 to 5 grams of Baheda powder mixed with an equal amount of honey twice a day is considered beneficial. Similarly, the powder of the Kantakari root can be taken with honey or as a decoction. Both of these herbs are believed to reduce Kapha and clear the respiratory tract. Gently applying warm mustard oil mixed with a pinch of rock salt on the chest and back can also relieve tightness. Inhaling steam and gargling with warm water can provide significant comfort.
Additionally, asthma patients should completely avoid smoking, whether active or passive. It is essential to steer clear of dust and allergens as much as possible. Keeping the home clean and well-ventilated is vital. Stress can exacerbate asthma symptoms, so maintaining a calm mind is essential.
Regular check-ups with a doctor are important, and if breathing difficulties suddenly increase, immediate medical assistance should be sought. While Ayurvedic remedies can be helpful, it is safest to adopt them under a doctor’s guidance.
