Atul Bora Assigned Additional Charge of Parliamentary Affairs in Assam

Guwahati, May 19: In a significant move ahead of the newly formed Assam Assembly’s first session, Minister Atul Bora has been given the additional responsibility of the Parliamentary Affairs Department.

An official confirmed that this decision was made on the advice of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with the approval of Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya.

The official stated that, upon the Chief Minister’s recommendation, the Governor has permitted Bora, who also oversees the Panchayat and Rural Development, Assam Accord Implementation, Border Security and Development, and Excise Departments, to take on the interim charge of the Parliamentary Affairs Department.

Bora, the president of the Assam Gana Parishad, is a key member of Sarma’s second cabinet and currently manages several crucial departments.

This decision comes just before the first session of the newly elected Assembly, which begins on Thursday.

The four-day session is expected to run until May 26 and will include the swearing-in of newly elected legislators and other significant procedural tasks related to the assembly.

Political analysts view this interim arrangement as vital, given the Parliamentary Affairs Department’s crucial role in coordinating government operations and ensuring the smooth conduct of legislative proceedings.

Recently, Sarma’s cabinet was expanded to include four ministers: Rameshwar Teli, Ajanta Niyog, Charan Boro, and Atul Bora.

The Chief Minister has previously indicated that the cabinet expansion process will be completed after the assembly session concludes.

Meanwhile, attention is also expected to focus on the recognition of the opposition leader in the new house, a decision that the Speaker may make during the session.

The upcoming session is particularly important as it marks the first assembly meeting following the formation of the new government in the state.
